For 20 years Karyn, along with her associates, has built a thriving counseling practice for families in Toronto. In 2011 she expanded her work to New York City and in 2013, John Prato, The Consul General of Canada in New York, hosted a reception at his Manhattan residence honoring the work she has done for New York families and organizations. In 2013 she and her team launched the wildly creative dk Leadership. Designed as a New York loft, this space includes The Leadership Studio, offering inspirational all-day events for teens & adults, and The Coaching Studio, offering individual counseling for clients (teens, parents, families) from all over North America.

How is your Counseling Studio different than your Leadership Studio?
At our Counseling Studio we work individually with clients to help them achieve their emotional goals while at our Leadership Studio we teach leadership "tools" in a classroom setting. We want our clients to feel inspired not only emotionally but aesthetically - so our office for both studios is designed as a New York loft!
I don’t live close to your Toronto office. What are the other options?
Over 50% of our clients live outside of Toronto. To make it easier, we often recommend less frequent but longer visits for these clients. Many clients come 1x a month but will schedule a 2-3 hour session in order to minimize the traveling time. For other clients, phone sessions are preferred, and this works extremely well because our style is action & solution-oriented. In fact, we have clients all over Canada & the US (including couples who do marriage coaching) who benefit from this option.
What age groups do you work with?
We have clients from 8 - 80 years old and are experienced at working with any age groups (pre-teens, teens, young adults, adults). Specifically we provide:
- Individual Coaching (For Pre-Teens / Teens & Adults)
- Parent Coaching (For Parents With Children Under 8 yrs old)
- Parents & Pre-Teen /Teen Coaching (For Parents & Pre-Teens / Teens Together)
- Relationship / Marriage Coaching
What kinds of topics do you deal with at your Coaching Studio?
We have experienced outstanding success over the last 17 + years (especially with self-esteem, anxiety, depression, parent / teen conflicts & marriage conflicts) working with clients on topics ranging from difficult personal development to more leadership-oriented themes.
Some of the difficult Personal Development topics we deal with include:
- Self-Harm (Eating Disorders / Cutting)
- Blended Families
- Coping With Loss / Divorce
- Parent / Teen Conflict
- Marriage / Relationship Conflicts
Some of the Leadership Development / EQ (Emotional Intelligence) topics we deal with include:
- Goal setting
- Time Management
- Career Planning
Can you explain your “Coaching” philosophy and how this is different than counseling?
Although Karyn has her Doctorate in Marriage & Family, her style is more coaching oriented in that it is very practical, strategic and solution-oriented. She has taken principles from marriage and family therapy and applied them to more of a coaching methodology so that clients see concrete results quickly. While many people may find traditional counseling or “talk therapy” very helpful, our clients come to us because they want more of a strategic action plan to learn how to achieve their emotional goals.
Do all associates that work at your Coaching Studio share a similar philosophy?
Yes, we are very selective about who we bring on to our team. They must have a similar education (minimum Masters Degree), have a great connection with teens / couples & families - but also share the same coaching & solution-oriented philosophy.
How many sessions does it take for people to achieve their goal?
It depends on the complexity of the goal, the person and their motivation to change. If a teen comes to us to build their self-esteem / confidence, they often will achieve their goal within 10 sessions. Career planning is usually completed within 5 sessions. Marriage coaching typically requires more time and can range greatly from 10 to 30 sessions depending on the couple, the issues they are working through, and their openness to learn. Keep in mind that our focus is to help clients reach their goals as efficiently as possible so we focus on teaching solution-oriented "tools", which tends to result in more short-term coaching.
